Limited Term License

What is a Limited Term License?

A limited term license is the form of driver license issued to temporary residents in the United States that is valid for the duration of their stay. A temporary resident is a person who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident under U.S. immigration laws, but who does have legal presence in the country. In 2024 the Ohio BMV issued 33,748 new limited term licenses.

What does this mean?
Our office expects an influx of adult students needing to go through the Class D program. Adults are able to take this course and still receive a Class D certificate of completion. Class D certificates will update to capture the reason a student is taking the course. The reasons you will be able to select are:

  • Under 18 years of age

  • 18 years of age and older

  • Limited Term License applicant
